Tooth Extraction

Children’s Dentist

While our adult teeth are meant to last a lifetime, there are sometimes where tooth extraction may be necessary.

Tooth extraction is often a frightening procedure for patients, but at Scarborough Dental Clinic you can count on a stress-free experience.

Our team only recommends tooth removal when it’s the absolute best option for you. If you do need a tooth extraction, you can count on our compassionate team to provide a quality procedure.

When is Tooth Extraction Necessary?

If a tooth is extremely damaged beyond repair, it may require tooth removal in Scarborough. However, there are a few key reasons for pulling out a tooth including:

Extreme overcrowding- Orthodontics (like braces or Invisalign) are used to align the teeth and give you a straight smile. However, in cases with extreme crowding, this is not possible. Sometimes, we must remove a tooth to ensure proper alignment. This is most common in children, and with the help of orthodontics, the tooth will grow properly. We may occasionally use this method for adults

Infection-Tooth decay that extends to the pulp and root of the tooth is a serious health concern. Not only does it damage the tooth, but it can also allow bacteria into your bloodstream. When caught early enough, we can use a root canal treatment to preserve the tooth. However, if the infection is bad enough we must extract the tooth.

Gum disease- Severe periodontal disease can damage the supportive tissue and bones around teeth. This may lead to loose teeth. If the teeth are too loose, we must extract them. Early gum disease treatment can prevent this.

The Process of Tooth Removal Scarborough

  • The dentist will inject a local anesthetic to numb your mouth. In rare cases, we may use a strong general anesthetic.
  • For impacted teeth, like wisdom teeth, the dentist will remove gum tissue covering the tooth.
  • The dentist grips the tooth with forceps and gently rocks it back and forth to loosen it.
  • Once the tooth is loose enough, the dentist pulls it out.
  • The dentist then packs the area with gauze to limit bleeding. If necessary, he will place a few stitches to close the site.
  • The doctor provides you with a detailed home-care plan to limit the pain and ensure proper healing.
